Registration for Donbas Media Forum Launched

May 15 – The Pylyp Orlyk Institute for Democracy (POID), the Donetsk Institute of Information, and the Donetsk Press Club announced registration for the Third Annual Donbas Media Forum in Sviatohirsk, Donetsk Oblast, on June 28-29. The lead topic is “Donbas Media: From Populism to Facts.”

Media coverage of the Donbas tends to be overly biased and penetrates all aspects of Ukrainian broadcast journalism. This can lead to a distorted perception of the news media and a lack of trust in it from the country’s citizens. Journalists can violate basic media standards while covering sensitive topics. And, psychological trauma many journalists experience in eastern Ukraine can adversely affect their editorial content.

The agenda includes segments covering political populism and journalism standards; improving the Donbas media’s efficiency, including editorial content, management, fundraising, and new technology; and conflict-sensitive journalism, enabling journalists to report on conflict without feeding its flames.

Speakers include Andriy Shapovalov, director of the UA:Pershy Luhansk affiliate; Svitlana Yeremenko, POID’s executive director; Diana Dutsyk, Detector Media’s executive director; Nicolas Ebnöther of the Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Representative on Freedom of Speech; and Anastasia Taylor-Lind, correspondent for National Geographic, The New Yorker, TIME, The Sunday Times Magazine, and the Telegraph magazine.
