Romaniuk Speaks in Defense of Journalists

February 3 – Oksana Romaniuk, Executive Director of the Institute of Mass Information (IMI), said the Council for Protection of Journalists’ Professional Activity and Freedom of Speech will continue to encourage Ukrainian government authorities to investigate crimes against journalists. She made the remarks at an international conference in Kyiv titled Safety of Journalists as Prerequisite to Free Media and Freedom of Speech.

“Platform for a dialogue established at the President(ial) Administration is needed”, Romanuik said. “And we would like to organize quarterly meetings in a public format. It is important to send a signal that the government pays attention to the impunity of crimes against journalists.”

The Council’s primary objective is to monitor journalists’ professional activities as well as overall freedom of speech in Ukraine in the context of European democratic standards. It was established by presidential decree about one year ago, February 23, 2016.
