IMI Names Ten Online Media to the Whitelist for Achieving High Professional Standards
September 29 – The Institute of Mass Information (IMI) announced the results of the second round of its 2021 monitoring of professional standards of online media. Ten media were included on the IMI Whitelist: Suspilne, Hromadske, Liga, Ukrayinska Pravda, Ukrinform, Radio Liberty, Dzerkalo Tyzhdnya, NV, Espresso and Babel.
IMI conducted its study in two stages. In the first stage, IMI selected 50 popular Ukrainian online media on the basis of previous monitoring, and evaluated them for the presence of manipulations, fakes, and black PR. In the second stage, the media that passed the first stage were analyzed for professional standards of balance, credibility, and separation of facts from comments, as well as levels of sexism and hate speech. Editorial transparency – availability of contacts on the website, editorial policies, and funding sources – was also taken into consideration.
The average level of compliance with professional standards of the ten whitelisted media was 96%.
The idea of the IMI Whitelisting project was based upon similar international initiatives run by UnitedforNews, Journalism Trust Initiative, and Internews. The research methodology is available at this link. This study was made possible by the support of the USAID Media Program in Ukraine project, which is implemented by Internews.
