IMI Publishes Assessment of Top-10 Ukrainian Telegram Channels

September 16 – The Institute of Mass Information (IMI) analyzed how Ukrainians use Telegram, one of the country’s most popular social media. Telegram was founded by Russian Pavel Durov, and is the fastest-growing social network in Ukraine according to the 2020 USAID-Internews Media Consumption Survey, with 38% of respondents using Telegram (compared to 24% in 2019). Its distinctive features are anonymity (everyone can have a channel without disclosing their identity) and there is no content moderation, which facilitates free exchange of information, but also enables the rapid transmission of pornography, disinformation, and conspiracy theories.

According to the statistics of the analytical system TGstat, the following Telegram channels enjoy the largest audiences in Ukraine: Coronavirus InfoUkraine NowUkraine 24/7Music | TracksTSNUkraine OnlineFirst, All-seeing EYETypical Ukraine, and Anatoliy Shariy.

  • Seven out of the top ten Telegram channels are not related to media outlets at all; and none of Ukraine’s quality media channels are in the top ten;
  • Just two channels provide information about their owners (Coronavirus Info and Anatoliy Shariy), while the others are anonymous. Coronavirus Info Telegram channel is administered by the Agency of Cognitive Modeling, a former partner of the Ministry of Healthcare. According to the IMI report, the Ministry is no longer administering the channel, while the Agency is using it to publish hidden advertising; and
  • Eight out of ten channels publish in Russian language.
