IMI Publishes Barometer of Freedom of Speech for October 2021
November 3 – The Institute of Mass Information (IMI) reported 14 violations of freedom of speech in Ukraine in its October 2021 Barometer of Freedom of Speech. IMI experts said most of the violations (nine) were recorded in the category of physical aggression against journalists conducting their professional work. Some examples of the violations are:
- In Kyiv, two journalists were attacked and detained during an interview with the head of Ukreximbank, Yevhen Metsger;
- The Slidstvo.Info investigative reporting team experienced pressure when the director of the venue chosen for the premiere of their latest film threatened to cancel the screening just five hours prior to the show;
- Journalists of national TV channels (UA:PBC, Priamyi, and Ukraina) complained about pressure from the Office of the President to change their talk show guests.
Eight violations occurred in Kyiv, and one each in Volyn, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolayiv, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions.
Since the beginning of 2021, IMI has recorded 153 cases of violation of journalists’ professional rights. The IMI monthly Barometer of Freedom of Speech is supported by the USAID Media Program in Ukraine, implemented by Internews.
