Institute of Mass Information Addresses Coronavirus Pandemic
March 16 – The Institute of Mass Information (IMI) prepared a series of recommendations for media, public servants and general public on information sharing, communication and news consumption regarding the coronavirus pandemic.
To reduce social tensions and prevent panic, IMI developed general recommendations for public servants and media workers on how to improve communication. For journalists, IMI developed recommendations on how to cover an outbreak of disease and how to reduce emotionality of news.
IMI also produced recommendations for the general public on how to consume information to avoid the many manipulations and fake news stories about the pandemic that are now widely spread through media, social media and messenger apps.
IMI calls on media to follow professional journalistic standards and the principles of constructive journalism, and to avoid exaggeration and emotional messages that provoke panic.
