Rivne Sex Offender Documentary Wins 2018 Honor of Profession Award

May 16: “With Word and Body or Professor of Harassment”, a film documenting the sex harassment investigation in Rivne Humanitarian University jointly conducted by the Chetverta Vlada [Fourth Estate] investigative reporting center and Slidstvo.Info, a long-standing partner of Internews in Ukraine, has won a prestigious “Honor of the Profession” award.

The award has been administered by the Independent Association of Broadcasters and the Ukrainian Association of Media Business – the contest’s two organizers.

The film takes Anna Kalaur, the winning reporter in the nomination “The Hope of Journalism”, to the University in north-west Ukraine where she finds out that over the past 20 years 13 female students and graduates experienced sexual harassment, rape and/or inappropriate advances committed by one of the professors working at the University’s dance school. Moreover, the crew managed to use a hidden spy camera to film professor as he was ‘offering his services’ to one of potential victims.

During the award ceremony, Anna spoke of her disgust that she felt towards this man. “This hasn’t happened in Hollywood. This happened in Ukraine. Unfortunately, in Ukraine stigma and public misconceptions create barriers to bringing these criminals to justice. But the victims I talked to and filmed for our investigative report can feel relieved, at least, by the fact that this ‘professor’ has been finally removed from the school – forever!,” Anna added.

“With Word and Body” premiered on November 15, 2017 on the 152-nd edition of the TV program, the centrepiece of the 4-year Strengthening Investigative Reporting in Ukraine project, which was implemented by Internews and funded by Global Affairs Canada.

Ukraine’s prestigious “Honor of the Profession” Journalism contest received 582 entries this year. Anna’s film was shortlisted under the Hope of Journalism nomination along four other materials.
