Ukraine up in RSF World Press Freedom Index despite war

May 3 – In honor of World Press Freedom Day, Reporters Without Borders released the annual World Press Freedom Index for 2023. The index evaluates the journalism environment in 180 countries according to five indicators: political context, legal framework, economic context, sociocultural context, and safety/security. Ukraine was ranked 79 out of 180, from 106 in 2022. The report reads: “The war launched by Russia on February 24, 2022, threatens the survival of the Ukrainian media. In this ‘information war’, Ukraine stands at the front line of resistance against the expansion of the Kremlin’s propaganda system.”
